The Mersey Silence
(In memory of Adrian Henri
on the 40th Anniversary
of The Mersey Sound)
The scent of plastic daffodils
mingles with the chipshop stained
streets of Liverpool 8
Impaled seagulls
wrench themselves free
to fly over painted Rhyl sands
Ubu cries 'merdre'
as the final ferry
sinks slowly into the Mersey
White cotton knickers
rain from schoolgirl skies
as the Batsign flickers
just one last
just
one
last
over the forgotten
hopscotch pavements
of Mount St.
